Question 1

How do I start a committee session?

Accepted Answer

Go to Create a committee. A session is free and needs no account. You get a 6-character session code for delegates and a chair code for the dais: the session code plus 4 digits, like ABC123-4821. Keep the chair code for chairs only.

Question 2

How do delegates and chairs join?

Accepted Answer

Everyone joins at Join a session. A delegate types the session code and picks their country. A chair types the chair code. If you type a chair code (CODE-1234) the page switches to the Chair tab by itself.

Question 3

I am a faculty advisor. How do I follow my students?

Accepted Answer

Open the advisor board and add a room by its session code. The board is read-only: it shows where each student is in the speaking queue across every room you follow, and nothing you do there changes the session.

Question 4

How long is a room kept?

Accepted Answer

A standalone room is deleted 1 to 2 hours after the chair ends debate. A suspended standalone room is kept for 36 hours, or 72 hours if debate was held. A room that belongs to a conference is never deleted automatically.

Question 5

Why does a seat say it is reserved?

Accepted Answer

In a conference session, a seat with an allocated delegate is reserved for that person's account: they sign in and the seat is theirs. Every other seat is open to anyone with the session code.

Question 6

How do I apply to a conference?

Accepted Answer

Open the conference's page and press Apply. The application saves a draft as you go, so you can stop and come back. Your drafts and applications are under Needs your attention in the profile menu and in your account under Conferences.

Question 7

Do I need a credit to apply?

Accepted Answer

Yes, one credit per conference, and your first credit is free. Editing or resubmitting the same application never costs another credit. If you are rejected or you withdraw, the credit comes back to your balance.

Question 8

How do I pay the conference fee?

Accepted Answer

Once you are accepted, the conference's pay page shows what you owe. You pay by card, or by following the organiser's own instructions if they take payment manually. The fee goes to the conference. Gavelling adds no platform fee, so you pay exactly the amount on the invoice.

Question 9

What is my MUN CV?

Accepted Answer

A record of your conferences, kept in your account and shown on a public page you can share. Awards published on Gavelling are added to it automatically, with a verified mark.

Question 10

How do I get into my committee room during the conference?

Accepted Answer

When a room you are allocated to is live, a "Your room is live" pop-up appears as soon as you open Gavelling and takes you straight to your seat. The same rooms are listed under Live now in the profile menu.

Question 11

Does applying to chair cost a credit?

Accepted Answer

No. Chair applications are always free. Credits are only used by delegates, head delegates, faculty advisors and observers.

Question 12

How do I get onto the dais when my room is live?

Accepted Answer

Your conference page for the role is the chair page of that conference. When your room is live, a "Your room is live" pop-up (and Live now in the profile menu) puts you on the dais with no chair code. The first chair in starts the session; the next one joins as co-chair.

Question 13

Nobody was assigned to chair my committee. How do I get in?

Accepted Answer

Then the room works like a standalone session: the organiser gives you the chair code and you type it at Join a session. The page switches to the Chair tab when it sees a chair code.

Question 14

What is the difference between the Moderator and a Commenter?

Accepted Answer

The Moderator holds the gavel and runs the room: the timers, the lists and the motions. Every other chair is a Commenter and writes notes on speeches from the comment dock. Any chair can take the gavel from the top bar of the chair page.

Question 15

What does it cost to list a conference?

Accepted Answer

Nothing. Listing a conference, taking applications, allocating delegates and running every committee is free for organisers. Participants pay credits to Gavelling, and Gavelling takes no fee on your conference fees.

Question 16

What is the set-up checklist and the blue checkmark?

Accepted Answer

Your dashboard lists the stages: your page, committees with enough seats, chairs, emails, a secretariat (a second organiser, an invite, or telling us you run it alone), a payment method, then publish. Once every stage is done the conference gets its blue checkmark.

Question 17

Why must I set a payment method before applications open?

Accepted Answer

Because delegates need a way to pay you, applications cannot open and the page cannot be published until a method is set. That is true for a free conference too: choose Manual and write "This conference is free" in the instructions. Card payments go to your own Stripe account. Manual payment, with proof you review, is a first-class option.

Question 18

How do I watch the committees on the day?

Accepted Answer

Every committee mints its own live session. From your dashboard, Live shows every room at once, and the scoreboard brings the committees together in one ranking.

Question 19

What is a Gavelling credit?

Accepted Answer

A credit is Gavelling's own currency for applying to conferences. One credit covers one person's application to one conference, and it costs one US dollar. Your first credit is free when you create your account. It is separate from anything the conference itself charges: a registration fee goes to the organisers, a credit goes to Gavelling.

Question 20

How much does a credit cost?

Accepted Answer

One US dollar each. Bundles are discounted: {{tiers}}. Any quantity gets the discount of the highest step it reaches, so {{example}}.

Question 21

Is it one credit per application, or one per conference?

Accepted Answer

One credit per person per conference. Editing your application, withdrawing and applying again, or being asked to resubmit never costs a second credit for the same conference.

Question 22

Who needs a credit and who never does?

Accepted Answer

Delegates, head delegates, faculty advisors and observers use one credit when they apply. Chairs, secretariat and staff never do: their applications are always free.

Question 23

What happens to my credit if I am rejected or I withdraw?

Accepted Answer

It comes straight back to your balance. A rejected application returns its credit, and so does one you withdraw yourself. You will see the refund in your credit history.

Question 24

Where do I buy credits?

Accepted Answer

From the credit counter in the header (the small plus beside your balance), from the pricing page, or from Manage account. Payment happens in a pop-up on the page you are on, so you never leave what you were doing. If you run out while submitting an application, the same pop-up opens there.

Question 25

Do purchased credits run out or change while I am on Unlimited?

Accepted Answer

Credits you already hold stay in your balance while you are on Unlimited, and they are still there if you cancel it later. Unlimited covers your applications while it is active, so your credits simply wait.

Question 26

What is Gavelling Unlimited?

Accepted Answer

One plan that covers every application you make while it is active, so you never think about credits. It costs 3 US dollars a month or 30 US dollars a year, the same everywhere, and it renews until you cancel.

Question 27

Does Unlimited renew by itself?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Monthly renews every month and yearly renews every year, until you cancel. If a renewal payment fails we email you a link to pay once for another year, with nothing automatic after that.

Question 28

How do I cancel Unlimited?

Accepted Answer

From Manage account, under Subscription: Manage or cancel opens your billing portal, where cancelling takes one click. You keep Unlimited until the end of the period you have already paid for, and nothing is charged after that.

Question 29

Should I buy credits or go Unlimited?

Accepted Answer

If you apply to a couple of conferences a year, credits are cheaper: each one is a dollar and your first is free. If you apply often, or you lead a delegation and apply for several people, Unlimited at 30 dollars a year costs less than 30 credits and never runs out.

Question 30

I have a promo code. Where do I use it?

Accepted Answer

In Manage account, under Promo code. Type it in and press Claim: a code adds credits or days of Unlimited to your account straight away, and the page tells you which.

Question 31

Do conference organisers pay anything?

Accepted Answer

No. Listing a conference, taking applications, allocating delegates and running committees on Gavelling is free for organisers. Credits and Unlimited are paid by the people who apply.
