MUN Command vs Gavelling: Honest Comparison & Free Alternative (2026)

By Gavelling · July 2026 · 8 min read

MUN Command (often written MUNCommand) is the conference software built by the mymun team, and it is one of the most established platforms in the Model UN space. If you are evaluating it for your conference, this comparison lays out exactly where it is strong, what it costs, and how Gavelling compares as a free alternative — so you can make the call on facts, not marketing.

What MUN Command does well

Credit where due: MUN Command is a mature, full-stack product. At the time of writing it offers:

  • A large procedural toolkit — it advertises over 20 debate modes covering a wide range of rules of procedure.
  • Native mobile apps on iOS and Android alongside the browser version, with automatic sync across devices.
  • Dedicated interfaces for chairs, delegates, organizers, and faculty advisors, with live statistics, document sharing, and built-in chat.
  • Integration with the wider mymun ecosystem, which many conferences already use for listings.

The pricing question

MUN Command splits into two products. The free Session App is deliberately limited — 3 debate modes and 3 motion types at the time of writing — which is workable for a practice session but not for a real conference. The full Conference App is priced at €1 per user per day (free for up to 10 users).

Per-user-per-day pricing scales with exactly the thing you want to grow: attendance. A 200-delegate conference running three days is looking at roughly €600 in software fees — often a meaningful slice of a school or university conference budget that could otherwise fund venue, printing, or financial aid.

Where Gavelling differs

Gavelling covers the same two layers — live committee sessions and end-to-end conference management — with a different set of choices:

  • Free. Committee sessions and conference management both. No per-user fees, no per-day fees, no feature-limited tier to outgrow mid-session.
  • No delegate accounts for sessions. Delegates join a live committee with a 6-character code on any device. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for, nothing for 200 delegates to get stuck on during roll call.
  • Full session toolkit. Roll call with live quorum, General Speakers List with timer, moderated and unmoderated caucuses, Tour de Table, motion queue ranked by disruptiveness, voting with configurable thresholds and P5 veto mode, delegate–chair chat, document workflow, suspend/resume.
  • Conference layer included. Public conference listing and discovery, delegate applications, smart country-role allocation, delegation management for schools, payments and financial aid, study guides, position paper review, chair and staff recruitment, awards, and a shareable MUN CV for every delegate.
  • Web-only by design. There is no native app to install — which is a limitation if you specifically want one, and an advantage on conference day when nobody has to.

When MUN Command is the better pick

Honest answer: if your conference is already deep in the mymun ecosystem, wants native mobile apps, or relies on a specific one of its 20+ debate modes that Gavelling does not replicate, MUN Command is a solid product and the budget may be worth it to you. Crisis-committee-heavy conferences should also compare carefully — Gavelling's crisis tooling is still on the roadmap.

When Gavelling is the better pick

If you want the full stack — a professional live committee experience and applications, allocations, payments, and discovery — without software fees scaling per delegate per day, Gavelling gives you all of it free. Most conferences run on tight budgets; we think the software should not be the line item that eats them.
